He is much too important to ignore or to keep on the shelf unread. A group from my church is presently meeting, every Thursday morning, to read and discuss the section on prayer from Calvin's Institutes. My church is a huge blessing to me. I love the expository preaching I receive each week. Soli Deo gloria!!

Tuesday, July 21, 2009

I read a portion of L'Evangile selon Jean ( John's gospel) everyday. My Pastor plans to teach through this gospel verse by verse, in the fall. I'm very much looking forward to this. I've been recently using the Segond(NEG). I enjoy this french translation. The different french versions are beginning to pile up in my apartment. If someone out there in Xanga land is desperate for copy, feel free to message me.

I've also been listening to and reading a lot of Shakespeare. I've become somewhat of a fanatic. I can clearly see why he's considered the greatest writer in all of English literature! His writing is breath-taking in it's beauty!! He is certainly without peer, in my judgement. I also must acknowledge, however, that many of his plays can be very violent. I was actually surprised by how much violence there was. I have been listening to unabridged audio recordings( or performances), and following along with the printed text. It is very, very, enjoyable to go through a Shakespeare play in this manner! So far I've gone through the complete text of Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, Henry V, Henry VI, Richard III, and a number of his sonnets.

I've been considering playing tournament chess, again. The U.S. Chess Federation wants me to renew my membership. They sent me a mailing, offering to let me join at a discounted rate.

I've been really enjoying my classical music collection!! Classical music, and Shakespeare make for a nice combination. Salut, Mes Amis. Le Seigneur est Grand et Glorieux!! IL est mon Berger!! Soli Deo gloria. Sola Scriptura.

God glorified in man's dependence

This is a great sermon by Jonathan Edwards. This man was a theological giant!! As I was thumbing through the volumes I was shaking my head in sheer amazement at the quality and depth. His language is not as mentally taxing as John Owen's. There is the friendly debate concerning which theologian was the greater. In my view, both are unsurpassed!! They are the two greatest english-speaking theologians who ever lived. They were two of God's greatest gifts to the church!

I'm enjoying myself as I presently work through the Pauline epistles. This time, I'm using a french translation that was done by Louis Segond, and published in 1910. This is probably the most widely used translation in the french-speaking world. I also have a portion of it on audio. I've been listening to Romans and following along with the printed text. This has been quite enriching, eventhough the reader does so with a canadian accent. (No disrespect intended).

I've had a few health issues, but on the whole am feeling fine. My mind tends to get very active at night and so I've had some trouble sleeping. I think part of it is listening to too much news on the radio. (I don't own a television). I listen to the BBC, National Public radio, and certain talk radio programs.

I'm very thankful to be employed with so many losing their jobs. Let's keep them in our prayers!

Il est heureux, le peuple qui a le Seigneur comme Dieu!

I find myself needing to a take break from Dr. Owen. You have to expend a great deal of mental energy to read him. I have profited a great deal from his writings, but they are definitely not for the faint of heart.

I've had a blast reading and working through all four gospels in the Darby translation. (This is another french translation which was done around the turn of the 20th century). This is a very, very, literal translation, and I'm enjoying studying it. Those of you who read french can check out the version on line. Simply do a basic google search and you'll be able to locate it. My next reading project is to do a review of Romans using this version.

I continue to love listening to classical music while I study. It is a tremendous mental and spiritual high! I'm presently listening to a collection of adagios.

I love listening to my pastor preach! I love the substance of it. He's one of the most gifted teachers I've ever heard, and we are truly blessed as a congregation!

Louez Le Seigneur! Son Nom est saint!! IL est Le Vrai Dieu!!

Fabrice B., je t'aime. Comment vas-tu?

Blessings to all, and remember the Solas.(Those who are "reformed" will understand this reference). Soli Deo gloria.

Terry

Thursday, December 04, 2008

J'aime Ta Parole, Seigneur! It is definitely not for the faint of heart. It will take a careful reading to dig out all of the gold nuggets of truth, but your efforts will be greatly rewarded! He makes the point, very clearly, that mortification of sin is not something that we can do in our own strength. We will fail, every time, if we attempt to mortify it through our own efforts.

The more you read John Owen, the easier he becomes to read. I view this great 17th century puritan, as a mentor and theology professor. Here is another quote-------"Do you mortify? Do you make it your daily work? Be always at it whilst you live. Cease not a day from this work; be killing sin or it will be killing you." May the Lord sanctify us as we draw near to Him,and confess to Him our total and utter dependence.

I was blessed, to finish, re-reading the gospel of John, this past week. I decided, however, to do this in the "La Parole de Vie" version. (I originally intended to do this in the Ostervald translation, but the french flows much better in the Parole de Vie. I didn't want to over-tax my brain, since I was finishing the Owen book).

I might be attending the "Holiness of God' conference that's hosted by R.C. Sproul's ministry. It will be in Orlando in mid-march. If anyone out there is planning on attending, come over and say hello. I'll be the tall, african-american with the glasses. I don't think I'll be that hard to spot, if you catch my drift.

"Be killing sin or it will be killing you". ---John Owen

The above quote is taken from Dr. Owen's " Mortification of Sin". The entire work is centered around a brilliant exposition of Rom 8:13. I just finished the first chapter and have been greatly enriched! I also like the following eye opening comment about this author and work. " I owe more to John Owen than to any other theologian, ancient or modern; and I owe more to (Mortification of Sin) than to anything else he wrote."------J.I. Packer. That's quite an endorsement coming from one of the most learned, and well-read theologians, alive today!

I am also being blessed re-reading "L'Evangile selon Jean"(John's gospel) in the Ostervald french Bible(1938 edition). A copy was graciously sent to me, a while back, by a fellow xangan, who goes by the name Oliver Cromwell. I'm re-reading this gospel, because my pastor is going to soon be doing a major exposition of it. This gospel is very precious to me because it is the first book of the Bible I read after becoming a christian. It completely melted my heart.

For those of you who read the ESV, I would HIGHLY recommend that you get the new study Bible, by crossway publisher's. It is a gold mine of Bible exposition, and will help stamp out the biblical illiteracy that is so rampant in our church pews. Sola Scriptura!

Thursday, October 09, 2008

Seigneur, Je t'aime.
